In fact, when written incorrectly, your thank you can do more harm than you think. Below are seven of the most common mistakes you should avoid when sending your post-interview thank-you schmelzglas. You forgot to follow up with an interview thank youAccording to a national study, approximately 95 percent of candidates dont send a follow-up after their interview, even though the majority o f hiring managers expect to receive one. Dont follow the crowd in this instance. Send a thank-you email after each interview round to differentiate yourself from the competition and help advance your candidacy. You didnt proofread your interview thank-you emailWhen the competition is fierce, the littlest typo in your interview follow-up can be used to eliminate you from the candidate pool. Remember, spell-check isnt perfect. Before you send off your thank-you note, carefully proofread your message. Then read over it again. Then ask your friend you know, the one who majored in English or writes for a living to look over it to enkoranvers everything is grammatically correct and spelled properly, including the name of the organization and the interviewer.Your interview follow-up was genericIf youre going to take the time to follow up with your interviewer, dont use a generic template. Send a tailored message that demonstrates your genuine interest in the role and organization and remi nds the interviewer of your qualifications. Take notes during your interview so you can remember what the interviewer liked most about your experience, and you can highlight those points in your message.Related Your Guide to Post-Interview Thank-You EmailsYou only sent one interview thank you but honigwein with three different peopleIf you were interviewed by numerous people during your visit to the company, get ready to write a number of follow-up messages. Again, this is where your notes from each interview will become extremely helpful.Use the little details you learned about the interviewer, such as a shared hobby or an upcoming vacation, in your follow-up message to demonstrate your attention to detail and make your note more memorable. You waited too longWhen youre looking for a job, timi ng is everything. Send your interview thank-you notes within 24 hours of the interview. Also, be sure to ask for the persons business card or write down their full name and email address during the interview to ensure a timely follow-up.You used snail mail and the company is a high-tech startupConsider the company culture before you send off your thank you. In most cases, an emailed message is a safe bet. In fact, a survey by Accountemps found that 87 percent of employers said that email is an appropriate way to express thanks after an interview. However, if youve met with a very traditional organization, their hiring managers may fall into the 13 percent that prefers a snail-mail note. When in doubt, cover your bases. Shoot off an email right after your interview and follow up by dropping a hand-written note in the mailbox the following day.You wrote a novelThe purpose behind the interview thank-you email is to highlight the main points of your conversation, address any concerns th e interviewer expressed about your candidacy, and convey your continued interest in the position. Dont repeat your entire resume keep your message just long enough to cover the points mentioned above. If youre concerned your message is getting too lengthy, consider how much would fit in a standard thank-you card youd buy at a stationery store. Future Employee Benefit Programs Shifting for Many Retirees

Future Employee Benefit Programs Shifting for Many RetireesFuture Employee Benefit Programs Shifting for Many RetireesWhen it was put into effect, the Affordable Care Act had the greatest impact on the health and medical benefits market than ever seen before. However, the ACA has already begun to change the way employee benefits will be managed for millions of upcoming retirees for a number of factors. Health cost management, coordination of benefits with Medicare, and the fact that people are staying employed and living longer are just a part of this change. The State of Employee Benefits for Retirees According to a survey from Towers Watson, retirees will start to see major changes in their medical programs that will transform their health and well-being in the foreseeable future. The changes are coming because employers are concerned with the rising cost of retiree health benefits in an effort to better align with their workforce plans. Lets take a look at what the survey reve als about the state of the health insurance markets for retirees. The 2015 Survey on Retiree Health Care Strategies, conducted by Towers Watson, involved 144 human resources personnel from large and medium-sized companies that currently offer some form of retiree medical benefits. These represent companies that want to fulfill their commitment to retirees, which is why they were chosen for the purposes of the survey and why they continue to offer health benefits after the employees have left payroll ranks. Current Retiree Health Options Available Based on the Towers Watson survey, 78 percent of employers are either using or thinking about using a private Medicare exchange to help their retirees when it comes to selecting their individual coverage. 90 percent blame the costs of increased and ongoing administrative responsibilities on changes in how retiree medical plans are handled, including 84 percent dealing with ERISA obligations. Outsourcing employee benefits can offset thes e costs and requirements. Just over 40 percent of employers are thinking about funding medical benefits for retirees using a voluntary employee beneficiary association 401(h). Some 21 percent of employers have begun converting subsidies they offer into retiree medical savings accounts. New Benefit Options for Retirees One of the new options for retirees who are labeled as pre-Medicare include private and public health insurance exchanges. Retirees can essentially shop for the health benefits they need and that meet their budgets during this time span. Another new option for retirees is employers purchasing group annuities for their retirees at a capped rate. When employers do this, liability and financial responsibility are transferred to a highly rated insurer. This guarantees that the funding for the health benefits will occur for the life of the retiree. What Is Causing the Shift in Benefits for Retirees? You might be wondering what is causing the change in medical progra ms for retirees? One of the biggest factors driving the change is the rising costs of medical care for retirees. The AARP Foundation and Fidelity Investments indicate that a 65-year-old couple retiring this year will need $240,000 to cover future medical costs. That doesnt include the high cost of long-term care. Unfortunately, the Employee Benefit Research Insitute shares that, 60 percent of employees have saved less than $25,000 for their retirements, which means people are ill-prepared for the costs of their medical needs later in life. People need to get smarter about retirement investments now. Another factor driving change is the excise tax on high-cost health plans from the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which will take effect in 2018. According to the details of this law published by Cornell University, an employee with self-only medical coverage can expect this tax to be $10,200 multiplied by the health cost adjustment, and an employee with coverage other than self-only coverage can expect this tax adjustment to be $27,500. The changes are also being driven by employers claiming their current retiree benefits do not help in attracting and retaining employees. All of these issues are driving the change in how medical programs are handled by employers for their retirees. Employers Forced to Make Changes After looking at the responses from the Towers Watson survey, many employers appear to be operating under the thinking that they are forced to make the changes in order to keep retirees happy and be successful at the same time. Employers have always worked to reduce the cost and the risk of retiree medical benefits by capping their subsidies, changing the konzept plans and either limiting or ending benefits for new hires. Employers have also tried changing eligibility requirements along the way. As costs rise over the next handful of years, employers will need to make adjustments to how medical programs are offered to retirees.

How to spot a covert narcissist in your life

How to spot a covert narcissist in your lifeHow to spot a covert narcissist in your lifeNarcissists can be difficult to spot, especially if they are older and mora sophisticated. Over time, they learn how to optimally manipulate their victims, and get by with their schemes without anyone questioning them. What makes it even more confusing is that they dont all act the same way. Certain patterns of behavior are consistent, such as when they idealize, devalue, then discard their romantic partners. But there are actually three distinct types of narcissists who act very differently on the outside, according to therapist Elinor Greenberg. One of the toughest sub-types to spot is the covert narcissist, because they blend into the background much of the time. They arent a clich of a grandiose, self-obsessed, look at me narcissist, Greenberg said. Instead, they are quietly cruel and behave in a much more passive-aggressive way.For example, they may appear calm and professional to most people. But to those, they are in a relationship with they are demeaning, cold, and abusive, and they can switch between these Jekyll and Hyde characters with ease.People with dark triad personalities thrive off other peoples chaos, so a common game of theirs is to set their romantic partners up for failure all the time, then punish them for doing so. Sometimes they make empty promises, then get a kick out of the reaction when they dont deliver. They do what they want to do when they want to do it, said Shannon Thomas, a licensed clinical social worker who wrote the book Healing from Hidden Abuse. And then they make themselves look like the victim. Some even deny making promises in the first place, gaslighting their partner into think they are losing their mind. Over time, the victim may completely lose touch with reality, known as perspecticide.Covert narcissists are conflictedIt may stem from covert narcissists wanting to be worshipped. Greenberg said they are conflicted because they think a lot of themselves, but are also incredibly insecure.A closet narcissist doesnt say, I am special, she said. They point to something else - a person, a religion, a book, a dress designer - and they are special, so they feel special by association. You may wonder why anyone would be in a relationship with a covert narcissist in the first place, and the answer is complicated. According to Perpetua Neo, a therapist and doctor of psychology, one reason is covert narcissists are highly skilled at sucking their victims in with sob stories. This, she said, is a very effective trap for people who are high in empathy.Think about it like the covert narcissist has wormed their way into your heart, she said. There tends to be a string of misfortune, like every single ex is a jerk, every single friend they have is unhealthy. Always ask yourself what kind of circle of friends this person has. If they have zero friends, thats an alarm bell, because the whole world cannot be that unhealthy.Spinni ng tales about their abusive childhood, or their battles with addiction, leads highly empathetic people down a path where they departure to feel sorry for the covert narcissist. Further down the line youll develop a sense of responsibility over them, Neo said, because you feel tethered to their potential. But this covert narcissist has no intention of changing their lives, she said. Its all a way of sucking you in and a way of getting attention, and a way of justifying their s****y behavior towards you. They manipulate your empathyThe problem is, whether the covert narcissist is a colleague, friend, or partner, if you are their chosen victim, you will already know about their alleged problems. And often they can be hard to ignore. Some even claim they are suicidal, meaning walking away feels essentially impossible for the victim. This will be a way to condition you into a sense of fear and walking on eggshells around them, so next time you are not going to hold them accountable, Neo sa id. They may even say this very common statement Ive never felt this way about someone before. This, again, gives you this responsibility to take care of them, even to the point you allow them to isolate you from your other friends and family. With a covert narcissist, their emotions are paramount, but the victims needs and feelings are up for debate, Neo said. Everything is a competition, and nothing that happens to you even comes close to what theyve been through, they say. They will also never apologize, Neo said. Theyll simply give their victim the silent treatment as punishment until they give up and surrender.Their lies are sophisticatedEssentially, covert narcissists have a high contempt for others, and anything that threatens their superiority is taken as a direct attack, Neo said. Thats why they are so hung up on being superior and looking down on everyone else.People who are above them in any way, in terms of their assets, or their career potential, or their talent, itll be p rivilege, or the governments fault, Neo said. Everyone else is just a rich w****r. They had rich parents. Theres always a way of blaming another person. And someones fortunes or talents are attributed to something external from them. They may appear to root for the underdog, but its just a way of making them look better, Neo said. By supporting liberal parties, or defining themselves as a feminist, they essentially trick people into thinking they have morals, when really their integrity is in the gutter. They commonly tell other lies about their past, like beautiful or famous people they have slept with, or amazing job opportunities theyve turned down. Its all lies, Neo said. She added that covert narcissists tend to watch a lot of television because they are trying to mimic behaviors they see, such as empathy (which they are incapable of.)Escaping the clutches of a covert narcissist is hard because they drain their victims of energy and resources until they find a new target. Thomas calls it an IV drip of poison that doesnt stop until they move on.Its not until the covert narcissist is gone that the victim finally realizes what they were going through wasnt normal. But hopefully they do, and then they can start the process of healing, realizing it wasnt their fault, and putting healthy boundaries in place to never be a covert narcissists resource again. This article first appeared on Business Insider.

After 35 Years, a Change of Gears

After 35 Years, a Change of Gears After 35 Years, a Change of Gears Data-center consultant leaves company after 35 year tenure and makes the jump to a higher growth IT group.Kurtis Tatum had been working as a consultant at Unisys for the past 35 years and enjoyed his work. He’d done many different jobs there, and for the past five years had been traveling worldwide optimizing data centers. But last June, he decided that he needed to start thinking about looking for another job. He said he needed to be proactive, rather than react to the market.“Unisys had gone through five CEOs in the past five years; I was concerned about stability,” he said, noting that the company had lost money every quarter for the past two-and-a-half years and colleagues had been laid off. And there was something else looming that made him take action: a 55th birthday. “I didn’t think my job was in jeopardy. But better to find a job when I want to then to have to find a job because I had to,” he said.“If I had gotten laid off this year, I think it might have been more difficult to find a job. Despite what anyone says, there is an age bias out there. So I decided I would find a job on my own terms, and use as my leverage point that I didn’t have to take a job if I didn’t want it.”In June, he started testing the waters, looking on Ladders to see what was happening in the market. By October, he signed up for TechnologyLadder, which, he said, “turned on all the benefits, and got me in touch with recruiters. Once I did that, I received quite a few inquiries.”An advantage: cost-cutting know-howTatum was looking for the same type of job that he had at Unisys. As a consultant, he looked at client infrastructure and processes, working with clients to determine how to reduce costs at data centers and improve service. He says that it helped in his job search that his function was to help clients reduce costs, something that is valuable in today’s market. “With all the mergers that companies are going through, there’s a lot of overlap of processes. It’s a hot skill to have.”Between October and December he interviewed with four companies. “Things happened much more quickly than I expected,” he said. And, while he didn’t have a tight timeline for success, he said, “I did want to secure another position some time in 2009.”A recruiter for one of those companies, Siemens, first contacted him in late October about a position as an enterprise architect. The salary, however, was too low, and not something he was willing to pursue. He continued speaking to other companies, and then, in mid-January, the same recruiter called again about a more senior position at Siemens. Several interviews, both by phone and in person, were followed by negotiations on responsibilities and salary. He was hired in mid-March as practice lead for Siemens IT Solutions and Services.Eyeing a challenge over a salary increaseTatum notes that while salary was a sticking point for that first job back in October, “I wasn’t looking for a bigger salary; I was looking for a job with stability and innovation and a challenge.” And, ultimately, his new job came with a slight decrease in salary, although the full compensation package is slightly more. In his experience, said Tatum, salaries are down because of the economy. “If people are looking for a job with the expectation that they will get their salary matched or increased, they will be disappointed,” he said. His new position, which starts in mid-April, appealed to him in great part because the company is growing. “They have money to invest and innovate,” he said. “The job is doing very similar work to what I am doing now. And they were looking to bring in senior people to help them grow. They liked the experience and skills I could bring to their team.”Tatum said that while the economy has put a lot of people in his industry on edge, he believes there are a lot of jobs out there for people with the right skills. “I was concerned, especially at my a ge, about finding another job. But it seems to me that companies are looking for senior people. They need people who can come into a job and get things going right away,” he said. “I know that the senior people laid off at Unisys have had a better time than the young people with less experience.”Experience counts for a lot, he said. But the most important thing is to be prepared for what could happen. “If you’re not looking around, if you don’t pop your head out once in a while, it will be devastating when you get laid off.”

How to Interview Like a Politician

How to Interview Like a Politician How to Interview Like a Politician Take a cue from the political pros to nail your next job interview.   On Election Day in the United States, folks cast ballots for the general election of their public officials. No doubt their televisions have been bombarded with guest appearances, live debates, and commercials showcasing their local candidates for weeks beforehand. When you think about it, running for office is similar to conducting a job search. Just as a politician must convince his or her constituents of his qualifications for office, as a job seeker you must convince the hiring manager that you’re the right person for the job. Take a cue from the political pros to nail your next job interview with these three tips.Stay on messageWhen politicians are put on the spot during an interview, they usually manage to deliver a seamless response that acknowledges the question and then steers the conversation back to less controversial topics.  In other words, the candidate is able to ” stay on message,” no matter h ow hard the interviewer tries to derail the conversation. Before each job interview, carefully review the job description and identify the top three requirements for the role. Use those as a guide to craft your talking points. The goal is to practice explaining why you’re qualified for the position.Keep up with current eventsPoliticians need to stay informed about what’s going on in their communities. Similarly, it’s important for you to stay current with news related to your target industry and organization. Subscribe to industry-specific publications and set up Google News Alerts for the company in the days leading up to your interview. If you know someone who works at the organization, set up an informational interview to pick their brain and get a better sense of what’s going on before you interview. This will help you develop insightful questions to ask the hiring manager during your meeting.Show your passion and interestIn politics and the job search, it’s not just a bout what you say that matters â€" it’s how you say it. Great politicians and job seekers speak with confidence, sincerity and passion. Make direct eye contact with the interviewer and practice your interviewing skills so you can confidently speak to your qualifications. Make sure you have a genuine reason for wanting the job â€" whether it’s the projected growth in the industry, the company’s culture, or the work you’ll get to do â€" so you can show your passion for the role. Remember, when all else is equal, the person who is sincerely interested in and excited about the role will land the job.Use these tips to prepare for your next interview and you’ll win the position by a landslide! Why these two army officers started Kettlebell Kitchen

Why these two army officers started Kettlebell Kitchen Why these two army officers started Kettlebell Kitchen You may have the exercise routine down and be in great shape but everyone knows the real secret to being a healthy person is what you eat. Cue Kettlebell Kitchen. Founded in 2013 by former Army officers  Joe and Andy Lopez-Gallego, and Chef  Greg Grossman it is a  prepared meal service with a focus on healthy eating based on your fitness goals.   Ready-to-eat meals show up at your door or you can pick them up at your local  CrossFit gym.Since launching in New York it has expanded to over 700 gym locations across Chicago, Boston, and Philadelphia and now offers delivery nationwide.Ladders talked with the Lopez-Gallego brothers about their business and how their army experiences helped them launch a successful company:On launching KBK“We founded KBK with the mission to help people change their lives through food. We were inspired by our own desire to eat healthy without having to spend hours in the kitchen. We launched the company with the intent of helping athletes and regular peopl e perform better by providing them with the right nutrition to help them reach their goals.”We want to become the nation’s leading provider of affordable, nutritious, and delicious meals for people who are working towards a goal.On how their experiences in Iraq and Kosovo helped them build and lead this company“The army teaches you how to build a successful team of people who are all working towards a common goal. It also teaches you how to work together with people from a variety of different backgrounds.“While the challenges you encounter running a company don’t exactly compare to the challenges you encounter fighting in the army, both require thinking on your feet and making informed decisions in stressful situations.”On working with a sibling “We work well together because our strengths lie in different areas. I’m very analytical, whereas Andy is more extroverted and social. Because of that, I’m usually in the office, handling the business on a day-to-day basis. Andy heads up sales and is often on the road. He’s instrumental in helping us grow and expand. We balance each other out.” On the future of KBK “Our biggest focus right now is expanding our gym and office partnerships across the country. We just opened a new facility in California,  which will allow us to provide more delivery options to our West Coast customers.” On the best and worst career advice they were given “When I was attending  business school, Bill George, a professor and the author of ‘True North,’ talked about having ‘heart.’ He said that you should put heart into your work. This implies being passionate about what you do in a company and having the bravery to maintain company morale and carry everyone through hard decisions. “The worst career advice I was ever given was to focus on a position that pays well over a position that you’re passionate about. Following that advice has never worked out well for me.”

How to Involve Your Family in Your Job Search

How to Involve Your Family in Your Job Search How to Involve Your Family in Your Job Search As your family witnesses all of the blood, sweat, and tears that go into a job hunt, they’re bound to be curious how your efforts are paying off and if they might be able to help. Heres how to involve your family in this important chapter of your life with these ideas for age-appropriate involvement. How to Involve Your Family in Your Job Search Networking “One of the best reasons to involve your personal network is that they can help get the word out that youre looking for opportunities. You never know who their six degrees of Kevin Bacon is who may have the keys to your dream job,” says Victoria Sawtelle, community manager for Zety. Take your sister up on the offer to introduce you to her neighbor who she’s sure does something related to your industry. Ask your significant other to comb her LinkedIn connections for promising leads. Just be sure your partner, older children, and other relatives know what it is that you seek. “A common problem I see job seekers experiencing is that they work so hard to identify people who could help them in their search that when the inevitable question arises, ‘What are you looking for?,’ they aren’t ready with a clear answer,” says Corey McLellan, executive director of the Career and Connection Institute at Gordon College. “Take the time to be ready with that answer, and enlist your loved ones to amplify that message through their networks.” Preparing Is your mom an excellent proofreader or your cousin a top-notch negotiator? Put their skills to use when polishing a resume or trying to ask for a better compensation package. And your spouse may find it amusing to fire odd questions at you while doing the dishes in order to sharpen your ability to think on your feet and impress a hiring manager. Don’t overlook the potential value of teens to your search, too. They likely will be happy to shop with you for a new interview outfit (and give their honest opinion), and their ease with technology could help you navigate opportunities on social media or become comfortable using Skype for a video interview. Assisting on the Home Front Searching for a new position is like a job in and of itself, so don’t be surprised to experience difficulty getting everything done. Accept your brother’s offer to pick the kids up from school or your husband’s suggestion to order pizza after a long day. There’s also nothing wrong with (gasp) asking for help. Finding a suitable job benefits the whole family, so it’s perfectly reasonable to request that the kids make their own lunches or perform some yard work to free up time for you to search. You’ll make them feel like a valuable member of a team. And as an added plus, you’ll probably be much more pleasant to be around when you aren’t so stressed from tackling everything yourself. Lifting Spirits Finally, your family’s greatest gift can be their presence. They can get you to chill with them for a movie and popcorn after a frustrating day or tell you how awesome you look before a big interview. And even the smallest child can offer a hug when you need one the most. “Kids and partner/spouse are constant sources of encouragement,” says career consultant Mark Anthony Dyson, founder of The Voice of Job Seekers. “When your home is a refuge from a long and turbulent job search, its easier to recharge and refocus.  They are also a constant reminder of what is important.” Know someone looking for a job? Four benchmarkers everyone should follow

Four benchmarkers everyone should follow Four benchmarkers everyone should follow It is the inevitable question on first dates, job interviews and when dining with your overzealous aunt: Where do you see yourself in five years? Before you roll your eyes thinking about it, remember that while you might not need to know exactly where you’ll be in a few years, having goals is an essential part of career development. And while the expectations you set for yourself might be vastly different than those of your partner’s or your best friends, there are a few general “benchmarkers” every professional should work towards. As career coach and author Mary Camuto explains, these signify progress, recognition or achievement on your journey. Whether they are formal or informal, dreaming of something isn’t enough - it’s important to put the work in to arrive at your hopeful destinationHere, a few suggestions to help you brainstorm and set your own:I am finding the right opportunities for growthWhether early or a few years into your career, everyone has experienced a dead-end gig. Even if you liked that job (or your current one), if you can’t positively say you’re in a current situation that aids the progression of your skill set, career expert Joy Altimare says it’s time to seek greener pastures. As she explains, it is important to seek a position that helps you tap into your potential as a keen, strategic, compassionate and valuable professional. On the other hand, it isn’t merely up to your manager to provide these runways. Sometimes, you need to create your own too. As Altimare explains, consider seeking out networking events, continued learning seminars or programs and other avenues that build your robust network. You might also consider creating a “must read” list of business or development books that allow you to reach your full value - whether they are saving you time, money, sanity, or all three.I have a tribeEver hear the saying it is lonely at the top? That’s because if you don’t prioritize interpersonal relationships, you could wind up being incredibly successful … but alone. Though it might not directly translate in your LinkedIn profile or your income, when you have a supportive group of friends, colleagues, and mentors, you’re more likely to perform at a higher level. Not only do they give you confidence, but they become your cheerleaders and your editors, providing both feedback and encouragement. If you don’t feel as if you have a tribe, Altimare says it is a must-meet benchmarker for anyone in any industry or career level.“It’s so important to find and nurture healthy work-relationships. This is the network that will serve you well as you progress through your career,” she explains. “Cultivating mutually respectful relationships and building a reliable network of professionals in your 20’s and 30’s should be more of a milestone than getting that corner office.”I am actively investing in my financial futureThe most successful of workers aren’t just thinking of today or the number of zeros at the end of their paycheck… but rather, about what they’ll have saved in 10 years. And 20 years. And 30. One of the key measures of accomplishments and maturity is investing in your financial future. Altimare explains if you haven’t carved out a plan, it should be a top benchmarker since it defines so much of your career and your ability to retire. If it all feels a bit overwhelming, that’s normal. But it doesn’t mean you should hide from it. Instead of treading water, seek the advice of an advisor, read up on books or attend classes to update your knowledge.I am creating my ideal lifestyleClose your eyes and imagine what your ideal life looks like. While plenty of us have complaints, some are able to squint and actually envision the life they lead. Career coach Christine Agro says this is a smart practice to understand what you’re ultimately working towards.Whether this is owning your own home (or a few), working fewer hours but bringing in a larger income or logging hours remotely, this benchmarker sets the scene for your day-to-day, week-to-week, and year-by-year priorities.

Early Retirement Is an Option for Some Employees

Early Retirement Is an Option for Some Employees Early Retirement Is an Option for Some Employees Early retirement occurs when an employee decides to retire before the age at which he or she becomes eligible to collect retirement resources such as Social Security, a company pension, or distributions from a 401(k) or another retirement plan. Options for Early Retirement Many scenarios exist that would allow an employee to retire early. These are some of the potential scenarios: An early retirement is an option for employees who have saved substantial financial resources aside from retirement accounts. An early retirement is also an option for employees who have developed multiple income streams. For example, an employee who works full time, but pursues website development, freelance writing, or photography as a second income, may develop the part-time business into a full-time career. This works best when the employee has developed the income stream before retiring. For example, one couple retired, moved to an island, and opened a wine bar; however, they spent several years becoming knowledgeable about wine and saving money before retiring. The employee decides that early retirement is possible because of a combination of substantial savings as well as a second income stream. In additional cases when an employee chooses early retirement, the employee makes the choice and knows that he or she must continue to work. Often, they are burned out in their current field and their saved resources allow them the option of working part-time or with a more flexible schedule. Sometimes early retirees continue to work for their current employer but part-time and for part of the year. Depending on their field, this changed relationship can be an option. Other early retirees decide to pursue a job in a field that is different from their full-time career. Someone might have worked for years in higher education and education promotion, for instance, then, in early retirement, may begin working at a local church as a part-time administrator. Employer Incentivized Early Retirement Early retirement is also an offer made by employers who seek to cut costs and encourage highly paid employees to leave their employment by retiring early. Usually, the early retirement option is accompanied by financial incentives. Sometimes the employer wants to make room for younger employees with fresh ideas. The employer may want to promote employees so they gain experience in management or in lateral move jobs. But whatever the employers reasons, whether financial targets, attrition needs, or new employees, the early retirement offers must help them meet the targets they set. The employer reaches its financial targets when the correct number of employees needed for streamlining the organization and cutting costs accept the early retirement offer. Employees who are offered early retirement need to carefully evaluate the employers early retirement incentives in combination with their own savings and realistic additional income expectations and opportunities. Rarely will the early retirement offer completely fund retirement. Additional options, such as paid college tuition, often accompany early retirement offers, and must also be evaluated in the total equation. In either case, early retirement offers must be evaluated with the knowledge that if the employer fails to reach its intended workforce reduction targets, layoffs might result. Early retirement offers from employers are fraught with options that the potential retirees must consider with the understanding that they could lose the incentives and their job anyway if they choose not to accept the employers offer. In the case of a layoff, an employee will generally receive a severance package, but early retirement incentives will not be offered or available. Employees who are offered early retirement incentive packages should talk with a financial consultant to determine their best and reasonable options and alternatives. They should also keep track of the number of employees who are choosing to take the employers offer to best understand the potential scenarios that might await them. Its tough to refuse the incentive and find yourself laid off anyway- without the incentives offered earlier.

What You Need to Know About the FAMILY Act

What You Need to Know About the FAMILY Act What You Need to Know About the FAMILY Act The Family and Medical Insurance Leave, or FAMILY, Act would allow paid time off for people to take care of a newly born or adopted child or a seriously ill family member or to recover from their own illness. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) once again introduced the legislation in 2019; Gillibrand first introduced a FAMILY Act bill in 2013 and made family leave part of her campaign for president that was launched in March 2019. The proposed law would provide up to 12 weeks of paid leave at 66 percent of a persons monthly salary each year, with a maximum amount of $1,000 a week. The family or medical leave would be funded through a 0.2 percent payroll tax paid by employees and employers. The legislation would create an Office of Paid Family and Medical Leave within the Social Security Administration to administer the benefits. The money would be paid every month beginning on the first of the month as long as the employee had filled out an application within the previous 90 days, was insured for disability insurance benefits under the Social Security Act and had been employed for one year. Working Caregivers According to the bill introduced this year by Gillibrand, in more than two-thirds of families with children, all adults in the household work. Some 43.5 million people in the U.S. provide unpaid care to family members. Six of every 10 of those caregivers work, and more than half of them work full-time. An estimated 36,000,000 working-age adults live with a family member who has a disability, the proposed legislation states. Without paid family and medical leave, many workers are unable to take time away from work to care for newborn children, parents, and relatives with serious health conditions, or themselves. Only 17 percent of civilian workers in the U.S. are eligible for paid family leave through their employers, and fewer than 40 percent of civilian workers are offered short-term disability insurance through their employer to enable them to seek care for their own illness. Furthermore, almost half of workers who qualified for leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993 in 2011 were unable to take the leave because they could not afford to take time off without pay, the bill stated. Six in ten workers who took partially paid or unpaid leave reported difficulty making ends meet; half of these workers were forced to cut their leaves short due to financial constraints, according to the proposed legislation. Only 17 percent of workers were allowed to take family leave in 2017; among workers in the lowest-paying jobs, only 5 percent had access to family leave. Workers who lack paid family and medical leave face lost wages or even job loss when they miss work because of their own illness or to care for an ill child or parent, Gillibrands bill stated. In this way, access to paid family and medical leave plays a critical role in families’ efforts to maintain employment and economic security. The United States is the only industrialized nation to not offer paid maternity leave. The states of California, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New York, Washington, and Massachusetts and the District of Columbia require employers to offer paid family leave or have passed legislation that mandates it. Similarly Named Legislation The FMLA of 1993 provides employees 12 weeks of unpaid leave to recover from serious illness or to care for a newborn or a seriously ill spouse, parent, or child. The employee has to have worked for their employer for 12 months  and have worked at least 1,250 hours in the previous year to be eligible.  This law covers only companies with 50 employees or more. The Family Act of 2013, which was also introduced in the Senate by Gillibrand, sought to create a tax credit for half of the out-of-pocket costs associated with in vitro fertilization and fertility preservation.
