After 35 Years, a Change of Gears

After 35 Years, a Change of Gears After 35 Years, a Change of Gears Data-center consultant leaves company after 35 year tenure and makes the jump to a higher growth IT group.Kurtis Tatum had been working as a consultant at Unisys for the past 35 years and enjoyed his work. He’d done many different jobs there, and for the past five years had been traveling worldwide optimizing data centers. But last June, he decided that he needed to start thinking about looking for another job. He said he needed to be proactive, rather than react to the market.“Unisys had gone through five CEOs in the past five years; I was concerned about stability,” he said, noting that the company had lost money every quarter for the past two-and-a-half years and colleagues had been laid off. And there was something else looming that made him take action: a 55th birthday. “I didn’t think my job was in jeopardy. But better to find a job when I want to then to have to find a job because I had to,” he said.“If I had gotten laid off this year, I think it might have been more difficult to find a job. Despite what anyone says, there is an age bias out there. So I decided I would find a job on my own terms, and use as my leverage point that I didn’t have to take a job if I didn’t want it.”In June, he started testing the waters, looking on Ladders to see what was happening in the market. By October, he signed up for TechnologyLadder, which, he said, “turned on all the benefits, and got me in touch with recruiters. Once I did that, I received quite a few inquiries.”An advantage: cost-cutting know-howTatum was looking for the same type of job that he had at Unisys. As a consultant, he looked at client infrastructure and processes, working with clients to determine how to reduce costs at data centers and improve service. He says that it helped in his job search that his function was to help clients reduce costs, something that is valuable in today’s market. “With all the mergers that companies are going through, there’s a lot of overlap of processes. It’s a hot skill to have.”Between October and December he interviewed with four companies. “Things happened much more quickly than I expected,” he said. And, while he didn’t have a tight timeline for success, he said, “I did want to secure another position some time in 2009.”A recruiter for one of those companies, Siemens, first contacted him in late October about a position as an enterprise architect. The salary, however, was too low, and not something he was willing to pursue. He continued speaking to other companies, and then, in mid-January, the same recruiter called again about a more senior position at Siemens. Several interviews, both by phone and in person, were followed by negotiations on responsibilities and salary. He was hired in mid-March as practice lead for Siemens IT Solutions and Services.Eyeing a challenge over a salary increaseTatum notes that while salary was a sticking point for that first job back in October, “I wasn’t looking for a bigger salary; I was looking for a job with stability and innovation and a challenge.” And, ultimately, his new job came with a slight decrease in salary, although the full compensation package is slightly more. In his experience, said Tatum, salaries are down because of the economy. “If people are looking for a job with the expectation that they will get their salary matched or increased, they will be disappointed,” he said. His new position, which starts in mid-April, appealed to him in great part because the company is growing. “They have money to invest and innovate,” he said. “The job is doing very similar work to what I am doing now. And they were looking to bring in senior people to help them grow. They liked the experience and skills I could bring to their team.”Tatum said that while the economy has put a lot of people in his industry on edge, he believes there are a lot of jobs out there for people with the right skills. “I was concerned, especially at my a ge, about finding another job. But it seems to me that companies are looking for senior people. They need people who can come into a job and get things going right away,” he said. “I know that the senior people laid off at Unisys have had a better time than the young people with less experience.”Experience counts for a lot, he said. But the most important thing is to be prepared for what could happen. “If you’re not looking around, if you don’t pop your head out once in a while, it will be devastating when you get laid off.”

How to Interview Like a Politician

How to Interview Like a Politician How to Interview Like a Politician Take a cue from the political pros to nail your next job interview.   On Election Day in the United States, folks cast ballots for the general election of their public officials. No doubt their televisions have been bombarded with guest appearances, live debates, and commercials showcasing their local candidates for weeks beforehand. When you think about it, running for office is similar to conducting a job search. Just as a politician must convince his or her constituents of his qualifications for office, as a job seeker you must convince the hiring manager that you’re the right person for the job. Take a cue from the political pros to nail your next job interview with these three tips.Stay on messageWhen politicians are put on the spot during an interview, they usually manage to deliver a seamless response that acknowledges the question and then steers the conversation back to less controversial topics.  In other words, the candidate is able to ” stay on message,” no matter h ow hard the interviewer tries to derail the conversation. Before each job interview, carefully review the job description and identify the top three requirements for the role. Use those as a guide to craft your talking points. The goal is to practice explaining why you’re qualified for the position.Keep up with current eventsPoliticians need to stay informed about what’s going on in their communities. Similarly, it’s important for you to stay current with news related to your target industry and organization. Subscribe to industry-specific publications and set up Google News Alerts for the company in the days leading up to your interview. If you know someone who works at the organization, set up an informational interview to pick their brain and get a better sense of what’s going on before you interview. This will help you develop insightful questions to ask the hiring manager during your meeting.Show your passion and interestIn politics and the job search, it’s not just a bout what you say that matters â€" it’s how you say it. Great politicians and job seekers speak with confidence, sincerity and passion. Make direct eye contact with the interviewer and practice your interviewing skills so you can confidently speak to your qualifications. Make sure you have a genuine reason for wanting the job â€" whether it’s the projected growth in the industry, the company’s culture, or the work you’ll get to do â€" so you can show your passion for the role. Remember, when all else is equal, the person who is sincerely interested in and excited about the role will land the job.Use these tips to prepare for your next interview and you’ll win the position by a landslide! Why these two army officers started Kettlebell Kitchen

Why these two army officers started Kettlebell Kitchen Why these two army officers started Kettlebell Kitchen You may have the exercise routine down and be in great shape but everyone knows the real secret to being a healthy person is what you eat. Cue Kettlebell Kitchen. Founded in 2013 by former Army officers  Joe and Andy Lopez-Gallego, and Chef  Greg Grossman it is a  prepared meal service with a focus on healthy eating based on your fitness goals.   Ready-to-eat meals show up at your door or you can pick them up at your local  CrossFit gym.Since launching in New York it has expanded to over 700 gym locations across Chicago, Boston, and Philadelphia and now offers delivery nationwide.Ladders talked with the Lopez-Gallego brothers about their business and how their army experiences helped them launch a successful company:On launching KBK“We founded KBK with the mission to help people change their lives through food. We were inspired by our own desire to eat healthy without having to spend hours in the kitchen. We launched the company with the intent of helping athletes and regular peopl e perform better by providing them with the right nutrition to help them reach their goals.”We want to become the nation’s leading provider of affordable, nutritious, and delicious meals for people who are working towards a goal.On how their experiences in Iraq and Kosovo helped them build and lead this company“The army teaches you how to build a successful team of people who are all working towards a common goal. It also teaches you how to work together with people from a variety of different backgrounds.“While the challenges you encounter running a company don’t exactly compare to the challenges you encounter fighting in the army, both require thinking on your feet and making informed decisions in stressful situations.”On working with a sibling “We work well together because our strengths lie in different areas. I’m very analytical, whereas Andy is more extroverted and social. Because of that, I’m usually in the office, handling the business on a day-to-day basis. Andy heads up sales and is often on the road. He’s instrumental in helping us grow and expand. We balance each other out.” On the future of KBK “Our biggest focus right now is expanding our gym and office partnerships across the country. We just opened a new facility in California,  which will allow us to provide more delivery options to our West Coast customers.” On the best and worst career advice they were given “When I was attending  business school, Bill George, a professor and the author of ‘True North,’ talked about having ‘heart.’ He said that you should put heart into your work. This implies being passionate about what you do in a company and having the bravery to maintain company morale and carry everyone through hard decisions. “The worst career advice I was ever given was to focus on a position that pays well over a position that you’re passionate about. Following that advice has never worked out well for me.”

How to Involve Your Family in Your Job Search

How to Involve Your Family in Your Job Search How to Involve Your Family in Your Job Search As your family witnesses all of the blood, sweat, and tears that go into a job hunt, they’re bound to be curious how your efforts are paying off and if they might be able to help. Heres how to involve your family in this important chapter of your life with these ideas for age-appropriate involvement. How to Involve Your Family in Your Job Search Networking “One of the best reasons to involve your personal network is that they can help get the word out that youre looking for opportunities. You never know who their six degrees of Kevin Bacon is who may have the keys to your dream job,” says Victoria Sawtelle, community manager for Zety. Take your sister up on the offer to introduce you to her neighbor who she’s sure does something related to your industry. Ask your significant other to comb her LinkedIn connections for promising leads. Just be sure your partner, older children, and other relatives know what it is that you seek. “A common problem I see job seekers experiencing is that they work so hard to identify people who could help them in their search that when the inevitable question arises, ‘What are you looking for?,’ they aren’t ready with a clear answer,” says Corey McLellan, executive director of the Career and Connection Institute at Gordon College. “Take the time to be ready with that answer, and enlist your loved ones to amplify that message through their networks.” Preparing Is your mom an excellent proofreader or your cousin a top-notch negotiator? Put their skills to use when polishing a resume or trying to ask for a better compensation package. And your spouse may find it amusing to fire odd questions at you while doing the dishes in order to sharpen your ability to think on your feet and impress a hiring manager. Don’t overlook the potential value of teens to your search, too. They likely will be happy to shop with you for a new interview outfit (and give their honest opinion), and their ease with technology could help you navigate opportunities on social media or become comfortable using Skype for a video interview. Assisting on the Home Front Searching for a new position is like a job in and of itself, so don’t be surprised to experience difficulty getting everything done. Accept your brother’s offer to pick the kids up from school or your husband’s suggestion to order pizza after a long day. There’s also nothing wrong with (gasp) asking for help. Finding a suitable job benefits the whole family, so it’s perfectly reasonable to request that the kids make their own lunches or perform some yard work to free up time for you to search. You’ll make them feel like a valuable member of a team. And as an added plus, you’ll probably be much more pleasant to be around when you aren’t so stressed from tackling everything yourself. Lifting Spirits Finally, your family’s greatest gift can be their presence. They can get you to chill with them for a movie and popcorn after a frustrating day or tell you how awesome you look before a big interview. And even the smallest child can offer a hug when you need one the most. “Kids and partner/spouse are constant sources of encouragement,” says career consultant Mark Anthony Dyson, founder of The Voice of Job Seekers. “When your home is a refuge from a long and turbulent job search, its easier to recharge and refocus.  They are also a constant reminder of what is important.” Know someone looking for a job? Four benchmarkers everyone should follow

Four benchmarkers everyone should follow Four benchmarkers everyone should follow It is the inevitable question on first dates, job interviews and when dining with your overzealous aunt: Where do you see yourself in five years? Before you roll your eyes thinking about it, remember that while you might not need to know exactly where you’ll be in a few years, having goals is an essential part of career development. And while the expectations you set for yourself might be vastly different than those of your partner’s or your best friends, there are a few general “benchmarkers” every professional should work towards. As career coach and author Mary Camuto explains, these signify progress, recognition or achievement on your journey. Whether they are formal or informal, dreaming of something isn’t enough - it’s important to put the work in to arrive at your hopeful destinationHere, a few suggestions to help you brainstorm and set your own:I am finding the right opportunities for growthWhether early or a few years into your career, everyone has experienced a dead-end gig. Even if you liked that job (or your current one), if you can’t positively say you’re in a current situation that aids the progression of your skill set, career expert Joy Altimare says it’s time to seek greener pastures. As she explains, it is important to seek a position that helps you tap into your potential as a keen, strategic, compassionate and valuable professional. On the other hand, it isn’t merely up to your manager to provide these runways. Sometimes, you need to create your own too. As Altimare explains, consider seeking out networking events, continued learning seminars or programs and other avenues that build your robust network. You might also consider creating a “must read” list of business or development books that allow you to reach your full value - whether they are saving you time, money, sanity, or all three.I have a tribeEver hear the saying it is lonely at the top? That’s because if you don’t prioritize interpersonal relationships, you could wind up being incredibly successful … but alone. Though it might not directly translate in your LinkedIn profile or your income, when you have a supportive group of friends, colleagues, and mentors, you’re more likely to perform at a higher level. Not only do they give you confidence, but they become your cheerleaders and your editors, providing both feedback and encouragement. If you don’t feel as if you have a tribe, Altimare says it is a must-meet benchmarker for anyone in any industry or career level.“It’s so important to find and nurture healthy work-relationships. This is the network that will serve you well as you progress through your career,” she explains. “Cultivating mutually respectful relationships and building a reliable network of professionals in your 20’s and 30’s should be more of a milestone than getting that corner office.”I am actively investing in my financial futureThe most successful of workers aren’t just thinking of today or the number of zeros at the end of their paycheck… but rather, about what they’ll have saved in 10 years. And 20 years. And 30. One of the key measures of accomplishments and maturity is investing in your financial future. Altimare explains if you haven’t carved out a plan, it should be a top benchmarker since it defines so much of your career and your ability to retire. If it all feels a bit overwhelming, that’s normal. But it doesn’t mean you should hide from it. Instead of treading water, seek the advice of an advisor, read up on books or attend classes to update your knowledge.I am creating my ideal lifestyleClose your eyes and imagine what your ideal life looks like. While plenty of us have complaints, some are able to squint and actually envision the life they lead. Career coach Christine Agro says this is a smart practice to understand what you’re ultimately working towards.Whether this is owning your own home (or a few), working fewer hours but bringing in a larger income or logging hours remotely, this benchmarker sets the scene for your day-to-day, week-to-week, and year-by-year priorities.

Early Retirement Is an Option for Some Employees

Early Retirement Is an Option for Some Employees Early Retirement Is an Option for Some Employees Early retirement occurs when an employee decides to retire before the age at which he or she becomes eligible to collect retirement resources such as Social Security, a company pension, or distributions from a 401(k) or another retirement plan. Options for Early Retirement Many scenarios exist that would allow an employee to retire early. These are some of the potential scenarios: An early retirement is an option for employees who have saved substantial financial resources aside from retirement accounts. An early retirement is also an option for employees who have developed multiple income streams. For example, an employee who works full time, but pursues website development, freelance writing, or photography as a second income, may develop the part-time business into a full-time career. This works best when the employee has developed the income stream before retiring. For example, one couple retired, moved to an island, and opened a wine bar; however, they spent several years becoming knowledgeable about wine and saving money before retiring. The employee decides that early retirement is possible because of a combination of substantial savings as well as a second income stream. In additional cases when an employee chooses early retirement, the employee makes the choice and knows that he or she must continue to work. Often, they are burned out in their current field and their saved resources allow them the option of working part-time or with a more flexible schedule. Sometimes early retirees continue to work for their current employer but part-time and for part of the year. Depending on their field, this changed relationship can be an option. Other early retirees decide to pursue a job in a field that is different from their full-time career. Someone might have worked for years in higher education and education promotion, for instance, then, in early retirement, may begin working at a local church as a part-time administrator. Employer Incentivized Early Retirement Early retirement is also an offer made by employers who seek to cut costs and encourage highly paid employees to leave their employment by retiring early. Usually, the early retirement option is accompanied by financial incentives. Sometimes the employer wants to make room for younger employees with fresh ideas. The employer may want to promote employees so they gain experience in management or in lateral move jobs. But whatever the employers reasons, whether financial targets, attrition needs, or new employees, the early retirement offers must help them meet the targets they set. The employer reaches its financial targets when the correct number of employees needed for streamlining the organization and cutting costs accept the early retirement offer. Employees who are offered early retirement need to carefully evaluate the employers early retirement incentives in combination with their own savings and realistic additional income expectations and opportunities. Rarely will the early retirement offer completely fund retirement. Additional options, such as paid college tuition, often accompany early retirement offers, and must also be evaluated in the total equation. In either case, early retirement offers must be evaluated with the knowledge that if the employer fails to reach its intended workforce reduction targets, layoffs might result. Early retirement offers from employers are fraught with options that the potential retirees must consider with the understanding that they could lose the incentives and their job anyway if they choose not to accept the employers offer. In the case of a layoff, an employee will generally receive a severance package, but early retirement incentives will not be offered or available. Employees who are offered early retirement incentive packages should talk with a financial consultant to determine their best and reasonable options and alternatives. They should also keep track of the number of employees who are choosing to take the employers offer to best understand the potential scenarios that might await them. Its tough to refuse the incentive and find yourself laid off anyway- without the incentives offered earlier.

What You Need to Know About the FAMILY Act

What You Need to Know About the FAMILY Act What You Need to Know About the FAMILY Act The Family and Medical Insurance Leave, or FAMILY, Act would allow paid time off for people to take care of a newly born or adopted child or a seriously ill family member or to recover from their own illness. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) once again introduced the legislation in 2019; Gillibrand first introduced a FAMILY Act bill in 2013 and made family leave part of her campaign for president that was launched in March 2019. The proposed law would provide up to 12 weeks of paid leave at 66 percent of a persons monthly salary each year, with a maximum amount of $1,000 a week. The family or medical leave would be funded through a 0.2 percent payroll tax paid by employees and employers. The legislation would create an Office of Paid Family and Medical Leave within the Social Security Administration to administer the benefits. The money would be paid every month beginning on the first of the month as long as the employee had filled out an application within the previous 90 days, was insured for disability insurance benefits under the Social Security Act and had been employed for one year. Working Caregivers According to the bill introduced this year by Gillibrand, in more than two-thirds of families with children, all adults in the household work. Some 43.5 million people in the U.S. provide unpaid care to family members. Six of every 10 of those caregivers work, and more than half of them work full-time. An estimated 36,000,000 working-age adults live with a family member who has a disability, the proposed legislation states. Without paid family and medical leave, many workers are unable to take time away from work to care for newborn children, parents, and relatives with serious health conditions, or themselves. Only 17 percent of civilian workers in the U.S. are eligible for paid family leave through their employers, and fewer than 40 percent of civilian workers are offered short-term disability insurance through their employer to enable them to seek care for their own illness. Furthermore, almost half of workers who qualified for leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993 in 2011 were unable to take the leave because they could not afford to take time off without pay, the bill stated. Six in ten workers who took partially paid or unpaid leave reported difficulty making ends meet; half of these workers were forced to cut their leaves short due to financial constraints, according to the proposed legislation. Only 17 percent of workers were allowed to take family leave in 2017; among workers in the lowest-paying jobs, only 5 percent had access to family leave. Workers who lack paid family and medical leave face lost wages or even job loss when they miss work because of their own illness or to care for an ill child or parent, Gillibrands bill stated. In this way, access to paid family and medical leave plays a critical role in families’ efforts to maintain employment and economic security. The United States is the only industrialized nation to not offer paid maternity leave. The states of California, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New York, Washington, and Massachusetts and the District of Columbia require employers to offer paid family leave or have passed legislation that mandates it. Similarly Named Legislation The FMLA of 1993 provides employees 12 weeks of unpaid leave to recover from serious illness or to care for a newborn or a seriously ill spouse, parent, or child. The employee has to have worked for their employer for 12 months  and have worked at least 1,250 hours in the previous year to be eligible.  This law covers only companies with 50 employees or more. The Family Act of 2013, which was also introduced in the Senate by Gillibrand, sought to create a tax credit for half of the out-of-pocket costs associated with in vitro fertilization and fertility preservation.
